Turning Art, Storytelling, and Creativity into a Nationally Recognized Path

Stories & Spotlights

For Lincoln, a senior at Destinations Career Academy of Oregon (ORDCA), art isn’t just something they create, it’s how they understand the world, tell stories, and inspire others to do the same.

Living near Blachly, Oregon, in the Triangle Lake area outside Eugene, Lincoln has found the space to explore their creativity deeply while pursuing academic opportunities that support their goals. Since enrolling at ORDCA in 2023, they embraced an environment that allows them to grow as both a student and an artist.

Finding Their Voice Through Art

Lincoln’s artistic journey began early. They started drawing seriously in fifth grade, originally creating comics, a passion that has stayed with them ever since. Today, they design, write, and publish web comics on platforms like WebToon, sharing original stories freely with a growing audience.

“Storytelling has always been the core of my work,” Lincoln shared. “I want to create original stories and find my niche, something that feels authentic and meaningful.”

Their work spans a wide range of mediums, from digital art and character design to 3D sculpture and sewing, including masks and costuming. While they’re proficient in many styles, they’re especially drawn to watercolor and wash techniques, often working in layered shades of green inspired by landscapes and nature.

“I feel like I evolve through each piece I create,” Lincoln said. “Art is how I process what I’m seeing and experiencing, and I hope it inspires others to explore their own creativity.”

National Recognition for Artistic Excellence

Lincoln’s dedication recently earned them national recognition. They were selected as one of just 50 students nationwide to receive the 2026 Rising Star Secondary Recognition from the National Art Education Association (NAEA), an honor awarded to exemplary student artists across the country.

To apply, Lincoln submitted five pieces showcasing their range, a suggestion encouraged by their art teacher, Mrs. Palmer, whose mentorship has played a key role in Lincoln’s growth. The selected works included original character designs, landscapes, digital art, and 3D costuming.

“There is no greater testament to your exemplary practice as an emerging artist,” the NAEA shared in its recognition letter. Lincoln will be formally honored at two award ceremonies during the 2026 NAEA National Convention in Chicago, held March 5 – 7, 2026.

A Supportive Learning Environment

Before joining ORDCA, Lincoln attended traditional brick-and-mortar schools, including returning briefly to in-person learning during middle school. Ultimately, they found that online learning offered something different and better suited to their goals.

“ORDCA gave me far more academic and creative opportunities,” Lincoln explained. “Having teachers who understand and support what I want to pursue has made a huge difference.”

In addition to their art courses, Lincoln has taken Photoshop classes and explored new tools that strengthen both their technical and creative skills. Their teachers, especially Mrs. Palmer, have encouraged experimentation, growth, and confidence.

Creativity Runs in the Family

Art is a shared language in Lincoln’s family. Their parents are musicians who play guitar, and their brother also creates comics for fun. That creative household has helped shape Lincoln’s appreciation for artistic expression across disciplines.

Outside of school, Lincoln continues sketching, developing characters, and refining storylines, often inspired by the natural surroundings near their home and the quiet space that allows ideas to take shape.

Looking Ahead

As they prepare for graduation, Lincoln’s goals remain focused on storytelling and originality. They hope to grow their presence in the comics world, continue sharing their work, and eventually collaborate with larger creative platforms, all while staying true to their voice.

Through ORDCA, Lincoln has found the freedom, encouragement, and support to turn passion into purpose. His journey is a powerful example of what’s possible when students are given the space to explore, create, and be recognized for their talents.
