Learning With a Purpose: How Destinations Career Academy of Oregon Prepares Students for What’s Next

School Announcements

Families want more than a diploma at graduation. They want confidence, direction, and a clear sense of what comes next. While National School Choice Week is observed each year during the last full week of January, the questions it raises are relevant year-round: Is high school preparing students for real careers, further education, and life beyond the classroom?

For students who want learning to connect directly to skills and real-world opportunities, education no longer must follow a single, traditional path.

Destinations Career Academy of Oregon (ORDCA) is a tuition-free, full-time online public charter school serving students in grades 9–12 across the state. Its mission is simple and intentional: help students graduate with both an accredited diploma and a strong foundation for what comes next.

A Career-Focused Approach to High School

ORDCA blends adaptable online academics with career-focused pathways that allow students to explore high-demand industries while completing graduation requirements. Rather than treating career planning as an add-on, coursework is intentionally aligned with workforce readiness, college preparation, and practical skills development.

Students learn from Oregon-licensed teachers, receive all instructional materials, and benefit from a guided onboarding process that supports mid-semester transitions without interrupting academic momentum.

Real-World Experience Beyond the Screen What sets ORDCA apart is its emphasis on hands-on, real-world preparation. Through Career and Technical Education pathways, students can work toward industry certifications and gain practical experience while still in high school.

A key opportunity is the school’s pre-apprenticeship program, which introduces students to skilled trades through hands-on construction experiences. While completing online coursework, students gain exposure to general contracting, equipment maintenance, and jobsite safety.

This blended approach allows students to earn industry-recognized credentials, including OSHA 30-hour training, and graduate with both confidence and experience.

Clear Pathways After Graduation

ORDCA’s model is designed to help students move smoothly from high school into the workforce, apprenticeships, or additional training. One alumnus, Fox , transitioned directly from

ORDCA’s pre-apprenticeship and construction experience into an electrical apprenticeship after graduation.

Stories like his show how career-focused education can shorten the gap between graduation and gaining meaningful employment.

Support for Every Learner In addition to career pathways, ORDCA offers online English learner programs to support multilingual students and families. Its comprehensive support model ensures students are academically prepared while also equipped to pursue post-secondary goals with clarity and confidence.

Education That Connects Learning to Life

Throughout the year, ORDCA shows how public education can adapt to support students’ real-world goals. Through balanced learning, career pathways, and hands-on experiences, students graduate better prepared to take their next steps with confidence.
