Teacher Spotlight: Bob Tatum – A Legacy of Connecting Oregon Teens to Careers in Construction

At Destinations Career Academy of Oregon, a fully online public high school, students are discovering a unique and powerful pathway into the trades, thanks to the dedication and vision of teacher Bob Tatum. After years of dedicated service in both the U.S. Navy and the classroom, Bob Tatum is retiring at the end of the 2024-25 school year, he has left an everlasting mark on the lives of countless Oregon students.
At Destinations Career Academy of Oregon, Bob has been more than a teacher, he’s been a mentor, trailblazer, and tireless advocate for career readiness. As the driving force behind the school’s Pre-Apprenticeship Program, Bob has empowered teens across the state to discover meaningful pathways into construction, manufacturing, and skilled trades.

A 20-year Navy veteran and former helicopter pilot, Bob brought not only technical expertise to the virtual classroom, but also deep-rooted leadership and heart. Under his guidance, the Pre-Apprenticeship Program has thrived, combining online learning with in-person, hands-on training through a partnership with Central Oregon Community College (COCC). Students gain practical experience with construction tools, math, and safety, while completing real-world projects like building sawhorses and cornhole boards
Equally impactful has been Bob’s commitment to connecting students with career opportunities. After completion of the Pre-Apprenticeship Program, students gain a competitive advantage when applying to construction apprenticeship program after graduation. With a background as a Navy helicopter pilot, public affairs officer, and training in automotive and shipboard mechanics, Mr. Tatum is no stranger to leadership and adaptability. His ability to connect with students, along with his unwavering support for career technical education (CTE), is what sets him apart.
“Apprenticeship programs are life-changing,” says Mr. Tatum. “Our program is about more than learning to use tools, it’s about building futures.”
As Bob prepares for retirement, the legacy he leaves behind is one of opportunity, empowerment, and lasting impact. His work has changed the trajectory of so many students’ lives, offering them skills, direction, and the confidence to succeed.
From all of us at Destinations Career Academy of Oregon, thank you, Bob Tatum. Your passion, leadership, and unwavering dedication to students will be remembered for years to come. Wishing you the very best in your well-earned retirement.
